MY TOP FOUR SELECTIONS

I particularly chose these writing pieces as my "top four" (no specific order) because they were enjoyable to write and revealed the gradual progress in my writing mid-way through this course. COMMENTARY:
In this writing piece, it was initially difficult to choose a flaw or a weakness about myself to write about. Many flaws and weaknesses flowed in my thoughts, but I decided to write about my grief I experienced when my uncle passed away. Because I was able to write about someone special from my family, it gave my voice power which in turn help me strengthen my writing. Since it my piece focused on my personal feelings, I was able to create a voice of my own. This piece naturally became a "creative" journal for me to express my own feelings. I enjoyed this assignment because it helped me express my emotions through creative writing. COMMENTARY:
In the assignment, No Way Out, my writing portrayed strengths in straight-forward claims. The first two sentences have a direct claim that answers the prompt. The prompt's main concern was: What exactly was the "monster" in this horror film?" My claim that I focused on was that "the monster metaphorically symbolizes the protagonist's inner monster : HIS MIND." I then supported this claim with evidence from the film. For instance, I used dialogue and visual images from the motion film, that way I could build ethos and pathos to my argument. |
COMMENTARY:
For this specific assignment, we were required to write a two-sentence horror story. Usually, stories are quite long and detailed. In my opinion, I thought this assignment was challenging in terms of choosing certain diction to achieve my goal: to instill fear in my audience. I enjoyed writing my two stories because I feel that my writing/story was successfully classified as horror by creating a frightened reaction from my audience. My first horror story was well written because it begins with expectations then those same expectations are killed with fear. These emotions commonly occur in horror films. You expect one thing, but there is always a "twist" at the end. My first horror story makes the audience expects the narrator ordinarily observing herself in the mirror; however, the twist occurs when her reflection suddenly reaches out to grab her. This creates a threatening feeling for the audience. My second horror story was strong in terms of appropriate diction. Also, I feel that my analysis to my second story had strength in revealing how the diction impacts the audience's emotions. In this case, the word "sleep" had a different meaning than the normal definition for "sleep". This "ENDLESS sleep" meant death, which became the ultimate twist of my second story. COMMENTARY:
The Cash and Reznor assignment assisted me in being able to dissect my topic sentences in order to analyze and elaborate on my commentaries. I noticed that my initial Cash and Reznor post was not thoroughly analyzed until we edited our first draft by peer review. Following the peer review, I improved on helping the audience understand the "why" and "how" aspect of Cash and Reznor's video. |
